What happened
After all of it had been collected, and sent to Winchester
where all of it was written down and put into a book called
"the domesday book"
The problem was, most people in England didn't
understand what Williams men were asking. People
called it strange and frightening.
At Christmas 1085, William sent his men to survey
the land by asking every person/each farming unit
a couple of questions.
The Manor
Villeins
Beneath Villeins were "cottars", people that had
little or no land to farm and weren't allowed to leave
the Manor.
They had land to farm but were not allowed to
leave the Manor.
Also known as "serfs"
All peasants lived on/in or worked in a manor.
A manor can also contain more then one village or
maybe even half a village.
No one manor is the same as another manor because
of the geography of the land.
A farming unit was called a "manor", which was made up
of fields, crops, woods, meadows and a village.
At the time of the Domesday book, almost all English people
lived in the country side.
Reasons Why
He wanted to be able to collect more taxes.
He thought that some of his Barons owned land
that really the church or him owned.
He feared another Viking invasion, so he wanted
to known where he could put his soldiers.
