Classification of animals according to the food they eat

Omnivores

Examples: rat, monkey

Omnivores eat plants, but not all kinds of plants.

Some omnivores will hunt and eat their food.

They eat both plants and animals

Frugivores

Example: Bornean orangutan

Highly dependent on the abundance and nutritional composition of fruits.

They eat fruits

Herbivores

Examples: sheep, zebra, cow

Herbivores need a lot of energy to stay alive.

Have special digestive systems that let them digest all kinds of plants, including grasses.

They eat plants and fruits

Insectivores

Examples: chameleon, spider

Most are the size of mice or small rats.

Insectivores make up almost 10 percent of all mammal species

They eat insects

Carnivores

Examples: fox, shark, lion

They have to eat many other animals over the course of the year.

They get food from killing and eating other animals.

They eat animals.
