The Women´s Movement

Goals

Economic Equality for men and women

They want to have equal pay for men and women

They want better jobs

Social equality for men and women

They wanted better education (Higher Education Act)

End stereotypes of women

End discrimination in the workplace and in schools

Political equality for men and women

Civil Rights Act

They wanted to pass something to protect reproductive rights

They wanted the right to get an abortion

Pass the Equal Rights Act (ERA) which was passed but failed to get ratified

Events

The Glass ceiling was a barrier stopping women from getting better jobs

pink Collar Ghetto was a term used to identify the jobs that women held

Playboy was a magazine that featured naked women and was considered sexist because it portrayed women as objects for sex

They would release books and give speeches to raise the conscious of women that were not supporting the movement

Commission of the Status of women was established after the civil rights act to try and enforce the bill

The Feminine Mystique is a book that Betty Friedan wrote that sparked the second wave of feminism

Higher Education Act gave them rights to get a higher education (college)

Ms. Magazine is a feminist magazine from the time

Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973 and the Supreme Court ruled that women had the right to get abortions

EEOC ( Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Women get included in the Civil Rights bill

Most of the nations poverty are women ( Feminization of poverty)

Key Leaders

Phyllis Schlafly was a women that public challenged feminism and called it destructive

Betty Friedan helped start NOW and wrote the Feminine Mystique

Gloria Steinem tried to change public opinion through the use of mass media

Sandra Day O´ Connor was the first women to be on the supreme court

Outcomes

The Equal Opportunity Act was passed in 1974 which made it illegal to deny credit to any women

Roe v. Wade secured the right of abortion

Women gained legal rights

Medicine and Law has opened up as jobs for women

Percentage of women in workplace has grown 30% in 1950 to 60% in 2000

Form of Resistance

Men would also openly speak out against Feminism

Businesses would refuse to hire women/pay them equally

Phyllis Schlafy was one of the women who spoke out against feminism

Organization

National Organization for Women (NOW) was the only major organization for the women´s movement and Betty Friedan helped establish it
