How to create mind maps

Thanks to Mindomo’s user-friendly interface, it is pretty easy and intuitive to learn how to make a mind map. You can use a predefined template or create your diagram from scratch.
In the mobile app, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: To start from a template, open the app, and from your Dashboard, click on the "+" button, then on “Choose a Template”.
However, if you want to create a diagram from scratch, select “Create a New Map”.

For new diagrams, you can choose from a blank mind map, concept map, organigram, tree organigram, timeline, outline, or Gantt chart. For template creation, scroll down to see all the categories and choose a template that suits your needs.

To get a different look than the one from the preview, click on “See All” - you’ll have a library full of themes to choose from.

Step 2: Once the newly created diagram appears on your screen, start adding topics and subtopics. To move/reposition a topic, touch & hold until the red frame appears around the topic, then drag it to the new location. Undo and redo your actions whenever is needed.

Speech-to-text is a time-saving functionality that enables the recognition of spoken language into text. You can further add the text as a note (1); add it to the selected topic (2), a new sibling topic (3), or into a new subtopic (4).

Topic customization - tap on the “Style” icon in the upper right corner, then tap on the topic you want to change. You can choose to customize a selected topic (Topic panel) or the entire diagram (Map panel).
You can customize:

  • text (formatting, alignment, font family/size, text color),
  • topic style (layout, fill color, shape, border color/width),
  • line settings (color, shape, width, ending type)
  • multimedia (the alignment of the image inside the topic; rounded corners to the image)
  • entire diagram (structure, color palette, size, background color, auto-alignment, auto-balance, custom style )

Insert panel - to enrich your diagram with notes, icons, images, etc., tap on the “Insert” icon in the top-right corner. You will have the following options:

  • Notes - add or remove notes to topics.
  • Hyperlink - add hyperlink attachments to topics.
  • Link to topic - add a link that navigates to a specific topic in the diagram when clicked on.
  • Link to a Diagram - add a link to one of your diagrams (clicking on it will open the designated diagram).
  • Attachments - add attachments to topics.
  • Text Scan - with this option you can either scan the text by taking a new photo or choosing a photo from our library. You can further replace the text on a topic, add the text as a new subtopic, or add each line as a subtopic.
  • Generate with AI - 6 options to choose from to expand your diagram using Mindomo AI.
  • Icon - add icons on your topics. Tap on the icon from inside the list to remove it.
  • Image - you can take a photo, choose an image from your device, or choose an image from the Mindomo library.
  • Quick Draw - this option will open a blank canvas so that you can freely doodle, and insert your drawing directly in the topic.
  • Audio - record an audio and attach it to a topic.
  • Relationship - add a relationship between two topics. Tap on the relationship and then on the “Style” icon to customize the relationship label (color, shape, pattern, arrow endings, width).

Step 3 - choose various miscellaneous options, then export and share your diagram:

  • Center Diagram - reset the diagram’s position on the canvas.
  • Collapse Diagram - hide all subtopics.
  • Search - search for content in your diagram.
  • Export formats - export your diagram as PDF, OPML, Markdown, or Text files.
  • Sharing options - add attachments to topics.
  • Presentation - create a presentation and play it.
